Discover the Gothenburg Avenue, a cultural city-walk from the square, over the bridge, past the theater and to the museums and concert hall. A special statue will wait you you at the end.
The museum, the theater and now the concert hall, all next to each other, built in at the same time and in the same style. This is the home of the national orchestra, Göteborgssymfonikerna, and, as you can see on the concert-program outside of the building, it is used for both classical and popular-music-concerts. The largest hall has 1400 seats.
I sight is also the state-library, the Lorensbergsteatern theater and Göta Cinema. The Poseidon is in the middle of everything culture in Gothenburg.
If museums are what you like, the collection of late 19th century Swedish and Nordic painters is worth the visit on its own, but there are also international artists to see like Edvard Munch, Monet, Picasso and Rembrandt. While inside, you can join many of the themed tours or just walk by your own. I find the staff friendly and helpful, and they can help you on your way or answer all your questions.
When the theater was built, the critics said that the architecture was too old-fashioned. I think it is just marvelous, the sharp lines in this neo-classical is how a good theater should look. What do you think? This is the main city-theater with a capacity for 600 people and is well known for its anti-Nazi productions during the second world war. A look inside is recommended, even if you don’t plan to buy any tickets.
Why they did put a statue of an old Greek God, I have no idea, but this is a great place to be if you want to see the view over the avenue. This is a good spot for photos in all directions. You are at the end of the trip, but there is still a lot to see around you, so take your time before you return. The statue is in the center of Gothenburg's cultural hub.
There is a lot of good restaurants in this area. My advice is to check them out in advance to find your favorite.
A boulevard like this is very typical in European cities, and Gothenburg wanted their own when they redesigned the city in the mid-19th century. Inspired by streets in Paris and Vienna, this one-kilometer strip was once outside the main city. Today it binds the most important cultural buildings together and I think it is well worth the short walk.
Opened in 1859, this theater is easy to spot on your route. Besides opera and lyrical theater-performances, the program today also includes concerts, conferences. If you will do a tour-retour, be sure to walk on one side up the avenue, and on the other side down.
This Avenue was built in the mid 1800s after an international architecture contest and extensive town planning. The area has Gothenburg's highest concentration of pubs and restaurants.
A bridge over the moat in Gothenburg, and it combines Kungsportsavenyen (The kings avenue) with Kungsportsplatsen (The kings place). There was a large gate here, built in stone, in the middle ages and that is why the name for the bridge contain the Swedish word “port” which means gate.
A wonderful place and bridge built in Italian renaissance style, but on a negative side, the place can be too noisy with a lot of traffic.
Constructed in 1852, this square was once the main entrance to the city, behind the moat which you still can see. Gothenburg has since grown, and Kungsportsplatsen is now in the midle of the city, but is still buzzy as ever, a meeting place for locals and visitors.
I think this is a nice place to start your discovering journy and the tourist information is nearby. Be sure to check out the statue of the old king Charles IX who lived in the 1500s.
Allow about 17 minutes to walk this route, but add extra time for attractions and other stops. Cycling this Gothenburg-route takes about 7 minutes.
